Memoirs of the Rampage
The first Windy City Rampage has come and gone, and all that's left is a lot of coolers, soda, and good memories. The school hosting the tournament, Columbia College Chicago, is an arts school in downtown Chicago that really isn't known for its sports teams. In fact, ultimate is the only sports team at the school. So this was literally the biggest sporting event in the history of the school.
In all, 18 teams from 6 states showed up for the event. Almost all of the teams were college only, and all of the teams were coed. Some of the teams who made long trips to attend were: University of Iowa, St. Louis University, Calvin College, and Washington University.
Except for circumstances beyond our control, the tournament went very well. We ran into problems with cross country runners on Saturday, and flag football and soccer on Sunday. Being true ultimate players, everyone was cooperative, and we were able to work around these other groups. I thank everyone for their help and being cool with our decisions about fields and playing times.
Each team got 6 games of ultimate for the weekend, and lunch on Saturday. Some teams got spaghetti on Saturday evening, while others were busy playing some great games of ultimate. Four different teams advanced to the playoff round. Madison Area Technical College and University of Iowa played for 1st place, while Grinnell College and University of Northern Iowa played for 3rd place. Iowa won 13-4, while Grinnell won 3rd place 13-11.
All of the teams received trophies, and everyone seemed to have a fun time at the tournament. For a relatively low entry fee, teams got quite a lot from the Windy City Rampage. Hopefully next year will offer even bigger and better things, now that we know what we're doing!
